Apollo senior Laura Head signed to continue her bowling career with Union College during a ceremony at Diamond Lanes South on Thursday.

Head has been with the Apollo bowling program since its second season in 2014, and she was a member of the inaugural girls’ team in 2015. All three of her brothers — Austin, Lynn and Tyler — also bowled for Apollo.

“I believe Apollo has influenced me to try hard even when I’m struggling, and put effort into learning and understanding what to do,” she said. “Whether my effort was spent on my studies or bowling, I have become self-aware of the issues I need to focus on.”

Apollo head coach Kerrie Gatton said Head has been a leader for the team and has played a big role in their success.

“Laura has greatly improved her game over the last few years and has become a leader on the girls’ squad,” Gatton said. “She does a great job keeping the team upbeat and positive and is one of the reasons the girls have returned to the state tournament the last few years.”

Landing on Union as her college of choice came after a pair of visits, during which Head said she enjoyed the campus and felt at ease with everyone.

Gatton is excited to keep up with Head’s progress in college.

“I truly believe Union and coach Tom Doyle are a good fit for Laura,” Gatton said. “She has a chance to make an immediate impact as a freshman there with her experience, and we can’t wait to follow her college career.”

Though she’s currently focused on her final varsity season, Head is ready to take the next step in her bowling career.

“I believe playing at the next level will help me through school,” she said. “I’ve been bowling and learning at the same time for so long it has just become natural to me. I’ve had plenty of great coaches in the past, but graduating to the next level will only challenge me more.“
