With millions of Americans eagerly awaiting their federal stimulus checks to help them through the COVID-19 pandemic, people are now able to find out when they can expect to get their money after the government on Wednesday launched a tracking tool called “Get My Payment.”
The first batch of stimulus checks hit consumers’ bank accounts on Saturday, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). But millions of people remain unsure of when the payments will arrive.
The length of time it takes to receive your payment depends on your income level and whether the IRS has your direct deposit information. Consumers are able to update their mailing addresses if they’ve moved since they last filed their tax returns.
How do I check on the status of my payment?
The Get My Payment service went live on Wednesday on the IRS’ website. It allows consumers to check their payment status, confirm whether they prefer direct deposit or a paper check, and enter their bank account information for direct deposit if the IRS doesn’t have it yet.
What do I need?
Depending on what information the IRS has on file, you may need to have on hand your adjusted gross income from the most recent tax filing period and the refund or amount owed that year, as well as your bank account and routing numbers.
What if I haven’t filed a tax return?
If you don’t file taxes, use the non-filers application to provide simple information so you can get your payment. You should use this application if you did not file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return because your gross income was under $12,200 ($24,400 for married couples), or you weren’t required to file for other reasons.
Do not use this application if you receive Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), or survivor benefits or railroad retirement.
How much will I get?
Individuals with an income of $75,000 or below are expected to receive $1,200, while couples with a joint filing income of $150,000 or below should receive $2,400. Those with children should receive $500 per child, with limitations. Those who made higher annual incomes in 2018 or 2019 will receive less money from the stimulus package.
