The City of Owensboro announced extended closures to various parks and summer programs Thursday night during a Facebook Live session with local officials, while the County is hoping to acquire more masks for small businesses.

City Manager Nate Pagan said many city facilities, parks, summer programs and pools would remain closed until June 21 in line with Gov. Andy Beshear’s phased plan for reopening the economy. (On Friday, Daviess County Fiscal Court announced similar extended closures.)

The complex at Jack C. Fisher Park, Edge Ice Center, Dugan Best Recreation Center, Combest and Cravens pools, all spray parks, and the Owensboro Parks & Recreation Administrative Center will all remain closed.

In addition, no shelter or facility rentals, tournaments, scrambles, birthday parties, leagues, lessons or programs scheduled prior to June 21 will occur.

“Governor Beshear also stated summer camps cannot occur in phase one, and unless data changes, will not occur in phase two either,” the City said. “Until the governor’s model allows, summer day camps at the Edge Ice Center or Parks Admin Center will not operate. We do not anticipate that will be on our standard summer schedule, or prior to July.”

The City’s website states that residents should expect a phone call regarding rescheduling plans or refunds for any league or program that required registration, such as ice skating lessons or softball leagues.

Pagan said outdoor park greenspace and trails will remain open, but everyone should continue to follow CDC guidelines.

Cancellations of events on City property will remain in effect until June 21 as well, Pagan said.

Also on Thursday, Judge-Executive Al Mattingly said Fiscal Court was hoping to get another 4,500 masks for small businesses within the next week. Mattingly said Fiscal Court distributed 3,500 masks on Tuesday within a four-hour time span.

Mattingly also provided updates about the drive-thru COVID-19 testing site located at Owensboro Community & Technical College. He said Thursday was the site’s busiest day, reporting 343 individuals tested. In total, 934 people were tested over three days, Mattingly said.
