The 2020 Color Blast 5K has been officially cancelled, as announced Friday afternoon. The race was originally set for March 21 and had previously been postponed until later this year. Next year’s race has already been scheduled for March 20.

However, with ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and unknown future distancing regulations for large crowds, the four organizing nonprofits decided to cancel the race.

Each of the Color Blast organizing nonprofits — Puzzle Pieces, Dream Riders of Kentucky, Inc., Team Karlie, and GRADSA-Green River Area Down Syndrome Association — have faced challenges in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

In the official cancellation announcement made on the Color Blast Facebook, the post reads, “It is our hope that registered racers will see their registration fees as a donation to each of these vital nonprofits who are facing unforeseen hardships. But we also realize the same challenges we face have been seen by everyone in the greater Owensboro community. We do not want to cause any additional hardships during this very trying time.”

Those requesting a refund should email [email protected], but they will not receive the 2020 race T-shirt. For those donating their registration fee to the four organizing nonprofits, they will receive a $10 voucher for next year’s race as well as the 2020 race T-shirt.

“We want to thank the nearly 2,000 walkers/runners who signed up for the event and for the teams that have become a part of the Color Blast family the last eight years,” the Facebook post reads. “We also want to thank event sponsors, many of which have been longtime supporters of the Color Blast. The Color Blast is a fun community event, but more importantly it represents gathering together to support those with disabilities to show that they are valued, able and special.”
