Football in Owensboro is done until the KHSAA State Playoffs start next week with Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic being the latest cancellation in the city.
DC and Catholic announced the decision Tuesday afternoon as the two now prepare for postseason play.
“This was a very tough decision to make but we made the decision we felt was best for our team and ensuring that we at least get to play in the playoffs,” Catholic athletic director and Football coach Jason Morris said. “The virus is spreading and we don’t want to take the risk of having to quarantine which would make us have to cancel the season and never get a shot at the playoffs.”
Catholic will head into the playoffs with a record of 5-3 as the Panthers are 3-4 going into next week.
DC coach Matt Brannon said his team will now look ahead to Henderson County.
“We are disappointed with the decision not to play,” he said. “We have been fighting to play all year, and we all understand the risks involved. There are no guarantees, so every opportunity to play is a blessing. It’s unfortunate that we don’t get to play a city/county game, but we will now turn our focus on beating Henderson.”
Apollo and Central Hardin were canceled last week as Owensboro’s final game against Breckinridge was pushed to last Friday as the Red Devils finished with their first perfect regular-season since 1993.
