Apollo 18, Owensboro 3 (4 innings)

Apollo scored in every inning Tuesday against Owensboro and made short work of the Red Devils when they cruised to the 18-3 win in four innings at AHS.

The win puts the Eagles at 1-1 in district play with only Daviess County left to play as only the first district game counts toward seeding this season.

Apollo scored four runs in the first and led 6-0 after two as the Red Devils put their only runs of the game on the board in the top of the third to make it 6-3 heading to the bottom of the frame.

The Eagles added three in the bottom of the fourth to end the game after four innings to give the Red Devils their seventh-straight loss.

“I’m really proud of the way we swung the bats tonight,” Apollo coach Mason Head said. “Top to bottom, the men saw it well.

Apollo rode Will Strode for all four innings as he struck out six and allowed three earned runs on five hits

“Will Strode pitched a solid game for us,” Head said. ” He cruised through the first two innings, got a little away from his game in the third, but overall threw a good game. I’m happy for and proud of him in getting his first District win.

The Eagles had six extra-base hits in the game by six different players.

Maxwell Holder led AHS as he went 3-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs to go with a double. Harrison Bowman (2-4, RBI, 2 R, 3B), Tanner Klee (2 R), Nick Judd (1-1, 2 RBIs, 2 R), Dan St. Clair (2-2, RBI, 2 R, 2B), Dayton Brown (2 R), Aiden Wells (2-3, 2 RBIs, 3B) and Landon Hamilton (2-4, 2 RBIs, R, 3B) all had big days at the plate for the Eagles.

Kindrick Williams led the Red Devils as he went 1-2 with a double, 2 RBIs and a run. Elijah Hampton had the other OHS RBI while Connor Hallmark, and Cayden Ray had the other runs for Owensboro.

Apollo plays at Daviess County Thursday while Owensboro hosts Catholic Thursday.

Owensboro Catholic 12, Daviess County 1 (5 innings)

The Owensboro Catholic Aces improved to 2-0 in 9th District play when they cruised to the 12-1 victory over Daviess County Tuesday afternoon.

Sam McFarland delivered on the mound as he struck out four and allowed just one hit and zero earned runs to get the complete-game victory.

At the plate, Hunter Small led the Aces from the No. 7 spot in the lineup as he went 3-3 with 5 RBIs, 2 runs and a home run. Jamison Wall also added a home run, 2 RBIs and a run from the No. 8 spot in the Catholic lineup.

Small said it’s nice to come out and get a district win.

“It feels good,” he said. “Especially run ruling this team, getting out of here quick and saving arms. That’s a big thing. Our lineup up and down, it doesn’t matter if someone is struggling because the rest of our lineup is going to get it done. Feels good.”

Even though some look at the Aces as the district favorite, Small said they can’t overlook any opponent.

“We look at every game the same, no matter the competition, what’s supposed to happen or what’s said on Twitter, we just come out and try to play,” he said. “Hit the ball, throw strikes and play defense.”

McFarland also helped himself out at the plate as he went 2-3 with 2 runs. Luke Evans (1-3, 2 runs), Luke Scales (1-3, 2 RBIs, R, 2B) and Finley Munsey (2-3, RBI, 2 R) also had solid days at the plate for the Aces.

Decker Renfrow had the only hit on the day for the Panthers as he doubled to start the game in the top of the first.

Catholic will go for 3-0 in the district Thursday when they take on the Red Devils before playing in the All “A” Classic State Tournament this weekend.

Daviess County plays at home Thursday against Apollo.
