The Glorious Glass exhibition — panorama of art using glass — opened this week at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art.
More than 300 works in a wide variety of glassmaking techniques which comprise the exhibition include blown, cast, etched, slumped and carved objects dating from the mid-19th century to the present by major American and European artists of the period.
A highlight of the exhibition is the unveiling of a monumental glass vessel made by Kentucky’s preeminent glass artist, the late Stephen Rolfe Powell (1951-2019). “Hesitation Whispering” is an example of the large vibrantly colored blown glass objects for which Powell is widely known.
Powell’s work is internationally recognized and is represented in major American and European museums.
The exhibition will also include the works of three glass artists with connections to Owensboro, including Brook Forrest White, Jr, and the late Mark Fowler and Robert Croy. White operates Flame Run Studio in Louisville and is best known for his large architectural glass installations.
Additional gifts unveiled in the exhibition include screen prints by Will Barnet (1911-2012), an important 20th-century painter and printmaker as well as by Kentucky native Wallace Kelly.
The exhibition will remain on view at the museum at 9th and Frederica streets through July 18. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12-5 p.m., and Saturday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free but donations of $3 for adults and $2 for children are encouraged.
