Apollo, Daviess County and Owensboro track and field teams made their way to Marshall County High School for the Class AAA, Region 1 Track & Field Meet Wednesday, looking to take home some hardware and have athletes qualify for state.

The Owensboro Red Devils did just that, claiming back-to-back championships after their win in 2019, with five athletes finishing in the top-three of their respective events. Owensboro also claimed first in three out of the four team relays.

Coach Drew Hall was thrilled with multiple performances from his team, including team relays and individual performances. One specifically being Maurice Moorman, who left his mark at regionals with limited experience in his event.

“This is his second meet doing long jump,” Hall said. “He’s been a pole vaulter for us and he’s been out with COVID, so he didn’t get all his four meets in to do pole vault. So I said, ‘you know what? Let’s put him in the long jump.’ And the first time he long jumped, he jumped 20 feet and that was at Apollo last week. And he jumped in regionals and won regionals today with a 21.”

Hall said they had three goals this year. The first was to win city-county, the second to win regionals and the third was to win state. Now they’re focusing on preparing for the biggest stage the team will have faced yet, looking to achieve that third goal.

“The same way we’ve been going all year,” Hall said. “Just focus, work hard and just get up there and compete … I have no doubt that we can do some things up there.”

Meanwhile, Daviess County boys finished fourth and Apollo boys finished eighth. Daviess County had three athletes finish in the top-three of their respective events, while Apollo had one finish in the top-three of their respective events.

The Daviess County Lady Panthers took home third place, while Apollo finished in fourth and Owensboro fell just behind at sixth.

Daviess County had five athletes finish within the top-three of their events, while also placing second in the 4×400 meter relay and third in the 4×200 meter relay.

Coach Mark Fortney was thrilled with excellent performances from Emily Rempe in multiple events and also Ainsley Taylor and Avery Heath who set a new PR in the 4×800 meter dash.

Fortney said his team has overcome a lot and that being able to compete was amazing after last year’s meet didn’t happen because of the pandemic.

“Our overall team performance was very good,” Fortney said. “Kids competed their tails off. After a year of COVID, just being able to compete was a blessing. It meant so much to all the kids to be able to have a track season. The kids have overcome a lot in the past 15 months.”

Apollo had three players finish in the top three of their events, while also finishing first in the 4×400 meter relay and third in the 4×100 meter relay.
