With a comeback in the works, the Owensboro RiverDawgs were stifled by a late offensive push from the Hoptown Hoppers, falling 6-2.
After the RiverDawgs got the first two outs of the third, a walk sparked a little two-out magic for the Hoppers.
Following the walk, Nico Montes singled to right putting runners on first and second. The next at-bat Jake Parr singled, driving in both runs to take a 2-0 lead.
A run crossed on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth for Owensboro, but Hoptown had an answer and nearly blew things open in the sixth.
Parr earned a leadoff walk and then Zayd Brannigan doubled to put runners in scoring position with no outs.
Jojo Cruz grounded out bringing one run in, but after another walk there were runners on the corners with one out. However, back-to-back strikeouts from Logan King allowed the RiverDawgs to escape the inning trailing 3-1.
Cole Gober erased the single run allowed with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, inching closer to putting pressure on the Hoppers with a comeback effort.
However, Hoptown had different ideas, scoring one run in the top of the seventh before adding even more to its lead.
Up 4-2, a single and a walk kickstarted things for the Hoppers. An error by Owensboro allowed one run to cross, before a fielder’s choice led to a 6-2 lead for Hoptown.
The Hoppers didn’t need much more run support, as they had been dealing all day long and came away with a 6-2 win over the RiverDawgs.
Outside of nine walks on the day, Hoptown had solid pitching from its four pitchers, limiting Owensboro to four hits on the day.
The loss moves the RiverDawgs to 8-8 on the season before a two-game series with the Madisonville Miners (3-13).
Owensboro will play the first of the two-game series at home, taking on Madisonville at 6:30 p.m. at Chautauqua Park.
