Daviess County, Owensboro Catholic and Owensboro were all able to grab road wins on Tuesday, while Apollo fell late to Meade County in its road matchup.
Daviess County vs. University Heights Academy
The Lady Panthers were able to snap their two-game losing streak on the road on Tuesday, defeating University Heights Academy 65-23.
Daviess County opened up the game with a big first quarter, as a balanced offensive attack put them up 23-8.
The Lady Panthers weren’t able to replicate that offensive success in the second quarter, but senior Brianna Daniel (six) was the only player that scored for the Lady Blazers in the quarter. With Daviess County’s defensive execution, they walked into the second half owning a 33-14 lead.
The Lady Panthers offense returned to form in the third quarter, as junior Adylan Ayer and senior Katie Mewes combined for 16 of the team’s 21 points in the quarter.
University Heights Academy continued to struggle offensively in the fourth quarter, only putting up four paints. This combined with a consistent offense from Daviess County led to a 65-23 win.
10 different players scored for the Lady Panthers on the night, while Ayer and freshman Lily Hoagland led the way with 15 and 10 points respectively.
Now sitting at 2-2 overall Daviess County will look to replicate its success in a road matchup against Owensboro at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Meade County
The Lady Aces were able to snap their two-game losing streak and grab their first win of the season by defeating Meade County on the road 63-55.
Owensboro Catholic hit a three to open up play Tuesday night, but the Lady Waves went on a 13-0 run for the remainder of the first quarter.
The Lady Aces offense came alive in the second quarter, using solid shooting from deep and at the line in order to outscore Meade County 20-14. However, their first quarter woes left them trailing 27-23 going into halftime.
In the third quarter Owensboro Catholic amped up the pressure defensively, using it to its offense and continued to cut its deficit down. Outsourcing them 19-16 in the third, the Lady Aces trailed the Lady Waves 43-42 going into the fourth.
The Lady Aces continued to battle in the fourth, forcing turnovers to create offense. Up by one in the last minute and a half of play, Owensboro Catholic went on a 7-0 run and secured the 63-55 win.
Owensboro Catholic shot 42% from the field, while Meade County shot 58%. However, turnovers came back to bite the Lady Waves as well as bench play.
The Lady Aces bench was monumental offensively, outscoring Meade County’s bench 43-5 to help lead them to victory.
With its first win of the season under its belt, Owensboro Catholic will look to grab another road win when they take on Apollo at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Apollo vs. Webster County
The E-gals suffered a heartbreaking loss on Tuesday, as a costly travel led to a late basket for Webster County and gave them a 57-56 win.
Apollo got out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter, as sophomore Jenna Dant (six) and senior Shelbie Beatty (five) combined for 11 points to lead the charge.
The Lady Trojans offense picked things up a little bit in the second quarter, as senior Sydney Shoulders scored seven of the team’s 12 points while holding Apollo to 11. Despite being outscored in the second, the E-gals were still in charge going into halftime 24-21.
Webster County came out of the locker room determined to find its way to a lead in the second half, outsourcing Apollo 12-9 to even things up at 33-33 going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as both teams continued to trade buckets. With neither team able to string together defensive stops, Apollo and Webster County need some overtime to decide a winner.
Thanks to senior Amaya Curry and Shelbie Beatty combining for all six of the E-gals points, they found themselves owning a 56-55 lead in the final 30 seconds of play.
Apollo nearly secured the win after getting a stop with 2.5 seconds left to play, but a travel was called and the Lady Waves got the ball underneath for one last chance.
Meade County was able to get a clean look and sank the shot on the ensuing play, securing a 57-56 win over Apollo.
Beatty led the way with 22 points, while Dant (12) and Curry (11) also finished in double figures for the E-gals.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Apollo, as they will look to bounce back when they host Owensboro Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Owensboro vs. Muhlenberg County
A strong third quarter helped push Owensboro past Muhlenberg County on Tuesday, defeating them 45-44 for its fourth win of the season.
Lighting it up with four threes in the first quarter, the Lady Mustangs got off to a hot start and took a 17-8 lead over the Lady Devils going into the second.
Owensboro was able to limit Muhlenberg County to one three in the second quarter, while holding them to nine points. Meanwhile, sophomore Alyrica Hughes scored six of the Lady Devils eight in the second quarter, as they trailed 26-16 going into the second half.
Hughes continued to lead the way for Owensboro offensively coming out of the locker room, sparking a massive third quarter for them.
The sophomore guard had 12 while eighth grader Unique Carter-Swanagan chipped in seven to combine for 19 of the team’s 21 points in the third. The Lady Devils also had a strong quarter defensively, holding the Lady Mustangs to 10 points and taking a 37-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter of play was an ugly one, with neither team really thriving offensively. Owensboro outscored Muhlenberg County 8-6, hanging on for a narrow 45-44 road win.
The Lady Devils now sit at 4-1 on the season and will look to stay strong when they take on Daviess County on the road at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
