Daviess County’s star quarterback finally put some ink on the dotted line Wednesday, as Joe Humphreys signed to continue his football career at the University of Miami at Ohio.
“It’s a great feeling,” Humphreys said. “It’s been a long journey to this point even being committed, with colleges still talking to you and what not. But it’s definitely a great feeling to finally have it all said and done.”
Humphreys tore apart opposing defenses all year long, averaging 303.1 passing yards per game, 46.2 rushing yards per game and five touchdowns per game (3.7 passing, 1.3 rushing).
With a 67% completion rate, Humphreys threw for 48 touchdowns while rushing for 17 touchdowns.
Humphreys recently visited the University of Miami at Ohio, and shortly after he knew that it was where he would play college football, saying it was the personnel that drew him in.
“The coaches and the players,” Humphreys said. “It even goes with the other players that they’ve recruited. They’re all great kids and obviously great players and the culture and atmosphere they’ve created there made it feel like home.”
Academics were also a concern for Humphreys, saying that they also are very focused on giving him the best education possible and that a degree from the university is something he’s striving for.
Humphreys has yet to decide what he’s studying at the moment, but feels as though it will most likely have to do with business.
The future Redhawk is leaving the Panthers on a good note, helping them to an 11-2 overall record and the third district championship in program history this season.
Humphreys touched on just how much the program has meant to him and credits the coaching staff for really helping him and his teammates maximize their potential.
“It means a lot,” Humphreys said. “Coach Brannon and the rest of the coaching staff has done a great job over these past four years and they’ve really made the culture different in the locker room and on the field… I think the biggest thing is we just had a lot of fun playing and made football fun for everybody.”
Humphreys said that during his time as a Panther, his most fond memories include the countless hours he spent with his friends.
“Just spending time with my friends honestly,” Humphreys said. “People say high school is the best four years of your life and it’s been a great four years. I don’t know if this will be my best for football, but it’s definitely been a tremendous time. I definitely will miss it.”
While Humphreys knows playing football at the next level will be a challenge, he is excited for the opportunity and is ready to get to work for the Redhawks.
“New relationships, new friends and more competition [is what I’m looking forward to],” Humphreys said. “I’m a big competitor. I like competing against other players with great abilities. So I think it’ll definitely be a challenge and will be hard to adjust to, but I’m ready for it.”
