Google’s live television streaming service, YouTube TV, is now available to all households in the Evansville/Owensboro tri-state area. The two-year-old service appears to be taking direct aim at cable and satellite providers such as Spectrum and DirecTV, labeling itself as a “cable-free” experience with “no cable box required.”
YouTube TV’s $40 per month fee provides access to a 67-channel lineup including local networks NBC (WFIE), ABC (WEHT), CBS (WEVV) and FOX (WEVV) with unlimited DVR storage and recording. The fee will cover up to six accounts for members of one household however TV can only be streamed on three devices simultaneously. The company’s support site shows a wide assortment of supported devices including Android phones, Chromecast, Roku, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Xbox One and several smart TVs.
While the Wall Street Journal called YouTube TV “the top internet-TV contender,” others are not convinced. In a forum discussing new market availability for YouTube TV, Reddit user /u/thin_king980 lamented the streaming service’s lack of A&E, HGTV, Food Network, The History Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and TLC adding, “HGTV is a must for my [girlfriend], but Hulu Live has more channels for less and a great [Video on Demand] library.“
New users are able to test-drive YouTube TV with a free trial. After the trial period, the standard $40 charge begins but users can cancel the service at any time with no additional fees.
