Adventures Untold Entertainment, the company that brought magic to your doorsteps, is closing after seven successful years. Jessica Barr created the business with less-than-modest expectations but said that demand grew to the point that it was impeding her family time.

What began as sending some characters to children’s birthday parties evolved into a full-time business with a sizeable character list and a permanent facility. Merrymint – a venue in Evansville also specializing in character entertainment – purchased most of Barr’s inventory.

“Their facility is roughly the same size as ours and is completely stocked with super-cute decorations and celebration supplies, plus a full basement for storage,” Barr said. “They saw I was interested in selling and thought it would be an awesome partnership.”

Merrymint offers storytimes and other small events in their space. Adventures Untold partnered with them recently on a birthday ball with Cinderella and storytime with Elsa and Anna from Disney’s Frozen.

At Merrymint’s request, Barr intends to assist with the transfer and in an advisory role, detailing how to care for the 30-plus wigs and 80-plus costumes.

“I have a lot of faith in them and what they can bring to this industry,” she said. “The owners both have young children, so I know their focus will be on the magic and making sure that children can still witness the good in the world.”

Despite scarce competition and constant demand, Barr said the business was never about money.

“It’s always been about the magic for me – it never bought me a new car or frivolous things,” she said. “It’s been about letting kids have a good time without screams or obligations – allowing them to be free and use their imagination.”

Barr created the concept for her kids, who were young at the time. She said seeing it close is undoubtedly the “bitter-sweet.”

“I will certainly miss it; there’s been a lot of anguish and tears over the past few weeks,” she said. “I only have my kids for a handful more years. I was focused on this dream for a long time, and it’s impeded on time with my family. I choose my family right now.”
