Owensboro has been selected to host the American Cornhole Organization (ACO) World Championships next summer. With the championships attracting pros from nearly all 50 states, local officials say the event will have a seven-figure economic impact.
ACO Cornhole estimates up to 800 athletes from ages 12 to 80 will come to Owensboro to compete for the title of best cornhole player in the United States.
“The economic impact of this event is well north of a million dollars. It’s going to fill up our hotels, put money into our restaurants and since the tournament is streamed, will serve as a great exposure for our city,” said Mark Calitri, Visit Owensboro President & CEO.
Frank Geers, ACO President, said Owensboro has become like a second home for their organization.
“It’s welcoming, easy to work with, and located right in the middle of the United States — making it the perfect place to hold a World championship,” Geers said.
The ACO World Cornhole Championships will take place July 25-29, 2023, at the Owensboro Convention Center. Admission is free for spectators.
The Convention Center will also host an ACO Major on January 5-6, 2023.
“With the World event coming later in the year, we expect the event in January to be a large event,” said Jeff Esposito, Owensboro Convention Center General Manager. “These events are perfect examples that our venue is truly a multi-use facility.”
