For Tamarra Miller, finding a January birthday party location for her daughter, Finely Kate, is challenging.

“Having a winter birthday options are limited for a location,” Miller said. “Add in being a single mom, I needed something that wasn’t going to cost a fortune.”

So when she read a Huffington Post article about a boy that loved Target so much he hosted his seventh birthday at the popular big box store, Miller reached out to a friend who works at the Owensboro Target to see if it would be possible for Finley Kate.

“My friend talked it over with the store manager and they gave us the OK,” Miller said.

Miller said she and Finley Kate, along with older brother Max, 6, frequent Target on a weekly basis.

“It’s our go to for everything from paper towels to home decor,” Miller said. “When I pick the kids up from school, it’s one of the first things they ask. ‘Are we going to Target today?’”

Finley Kate is a fan of the Target Dollar Spot, the girls’ clothing and of course, toys, said Miller.

The party guests, whom Finley calls her besties, were encouraged to wear red shirts and khaki pants and were given Target name tags upon arrival. The party was hosted in the Target Cafe, where guests could color, enjoy Target-themed cupcakes and photo booth props and “Team Member of the Month” poster board with photos of Finley Kate. Miller said the main event was a scavenger hunt through the store.

“I think the customers were trying to figure out what was happening,” Miller said.

Finley Kate asked for Target gift cards instead of wrapped gifts and went shopping after the party, picking out some of her favorite toys.

“She and her friends had a blast and were overheard saying ‘This is the best party ever!” by another mom,” Miller said.

And at only $125 in party expenses, including a cake and a photographer, Miller said it didn’t break the bank.

“I hope this is a party she’ll love looking back on,” Miller said.
