Owensboro Community & Technical College’s Oak Island Theatre is presenting its first show of the 2023-2024 season September 13-16. “Horse Girls” is a high-energy dark comedy centered around a middle school horse girl club, and the show is set in 2014.
“When The Lady Jean Ladies Horse Girl Club learns that their beloved horses are being sold and turned into glue, chaos erupts. Horse Girls can be described as a blend of Mean Girls and Heathers, offering razor-sharp wit and jaw-dropping surprises,” according to a release.
Director Grae Greer said, “The entire process has been nothing but laughter. This show is hilarious until it gets dark. And even then, it’s still comical.”
The production features a cast of seven actors who embody and capture the essence of middle school life in 2014.
“I indeed was a Horse Girl in 7th grade,” said Claire-Elizabeth Patterson, who portrays the character Ashleigh. “It’s been fun to take bits and pieces from my own past and include them in my acting process to really identify with the character of Ashleigh.”
The 3-day run will take place at The Acorn Theatre, located within OCTC’s Humanities building. The admission for tickets is “pay what you can” to promote accessibility for all theater enthusiasts.
Horse Girls contains adult language and violence, making it unsuitable for all audience temperaments and ages.
