David Wolfe loves good ghost stories, and he loves telling them to others. That’s why he’s brought back the Haunts of Owensboro Ghost Walking Tour for the 17th year. Interested parties can book tours on Fridays and Saturdays through the rest of this month.
Starting and ending at Ghostly Productions (203 West 4th Street), the roughly 1.5-hour tour takes guests through downtown Owensboro with stops at some of the “most haunted” places in the City, according to Wolfe.
Wolfe’s inspiration for the tours came when he and his wife took a trip to scenic Hilton Head, South Carolina, several years ago. They took in several ghost tours while in Savannah, and when he returned home Wolfe was inspired to create a one-of-a-kind tour that would captivate others with tales of the rich history of Owensboro. After going through print and interview research, Wolfe launched the first Haunts of Owensboro tour in 2007.
This year, Wolfe said he plans to take guests to what he considers the most haunted spot in western Kentucky. Without spoiling the location, he said it was just as haunted as Bobby Mackey’s in Wilder and Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville.
“It has a lot of ghost stories, a lot of great history. A lot of these places have what you wouldn’t call infamous history — like it wasn’t a crime — but they do have a kind of dark history,” Wolfe said.
Wolfe said he tries to change the locations each year and adds stories to keep things fresh for repeat customers, a feat he said is easy with the City’s history.
Wolfe said the tour is very hands-on, adding that this year he plans to offer some ghost hunting for interested guests.
