Encore Musicals is bringing back the off-Broadway hit “Daddy Long Legs” for a second round of shows in January. This marks the first time Encore has ever brought back a show for additional dates.

Tickets are on sale at encoreowensboro.com

Performances will be at 7 p.m. on January 19 and 20 and at 2 p.m. on January 21, with all shows at Third Baptist Church (527 Allen Street). The first set of performances was in October.

“Daddy Long Legs” first gained popularity as a book in 1912 by Jean Webster, with a subsequent movie starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron in 1955. Its most recent adaptation appeared in 2007 in a musical stage play by Paul Gordon, following the book by John Caird.

The musical is set in turn-of-the-century New England and tells the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott of the John Grier Home and her mysterious benefactor who agrees to send her to college. Abbott called him “Daddy Long Legs” after seeing his elongated shadow.

Abbott is played by Abby Clayon, a theatre and dance teacher in the Owensboro Public Schools system. The benefactor, Jervis Pendleton, is played by Justin Miller, a professional actor who recently returned to Owensboro, on furlough from an international cruise line.

The performance is directed by Preston Middleton with Susan Dant as musical director.
