The Owensboro Symphony has launched a new education program called Symphony Storytime that introduces young children to classical music through storytelling. This program features stories from “The Story Orchestra Book Series,” which provides illustrated retellings of classical ballet, opera, and program music stories — pairing them with short sound clips of orchestral music.
Symphony Storytime will be presented at the Owensboro Symphony Academy, Owensboro Museum of Science and History, Daviess County Public Library, and other locations throughout the community, including several area preschools.
During the program, a member of the Symphony (education coordinator, conductor, musician, etc.) will read the illustrated book to the young audience, with a goal of children discovering classical music in a fun and imaginative way.
“The Story Orchestra Book Series” includes:
- “Four Seasons in One Day” (Vivaldi)
- “Sleeping Beauty” (Tchaikovsky)
- “The Carnival of Animals” (Saint-Sans)
- “The Magic Flute” (Mozart)
- “In the Hall of the Mountain King” (Grieg)
- “Swan Lake” (Tchaikovsky)
- “The Planets” (Holst)
- “The Nutcracker” (Tchaikovsky)
Symphony Storytime featuring “The Nutcracker” will be held in conjunction with the City of Owensboro’s Hometown Christmas on November 28 at 9:30 a.m. at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, as well as on December 5 at 10 a.m. at the Daviess County Public Library.
