Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky (SparKY) is hosting its 11th annual Easter Bone Hunt from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Saturday at Ben Hawes Park.

The event field will be loaded with a selection of dog toys and treats and people can hunt with their canine for $10 per dog. Dogs must be up to date on vaccines and remain on a leash at all times.

Dream Copy Photography will also be offering pet photos for $20. Attendees can purchase a hunt and photo package for $25.

All proceeds go to SparKY, a no-kill animal rescue located at 1004 East 18th Street.

A group of locals who served with the PAWS organization in Newburgh formed SparKy more than 15 years ago to emulate that same model in Owensboro. The organization opened its facility on 18th Street in late 2021.

SparKy provides all rescues with the necessary vaccines and ensures that their maintenance and emergency medical needs are met. They also install microchips and ensure that all of the animals are spayed or neutered.

The members of SparKy strive to reduce the number of animals killed each year. Their goal is to educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering pets and responsible pet ownership.

No-kill shelters such as SparKy will only euthanize an animal if a veterinarian recommends it due to illness beyond providing the animal a good quality of life or due to severe behavior issues that pose a risk to humans or other animals.
