If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you have a new place to indulge with the opening of Madeline’s Specialty Sweets, a bakery that aims to set itself apart with a completely gluten-free menu.

Located just off KY 54 at 4399 Springhill Drive Suite B, in the building anchored by Trunnell’s Farm Market and Peacocks & Pearls, the bakery opened Tuesday.

“All my items are gluten-free, which is kind of the niche that I’m in,” said owner Madeline Allen, emphasizing how her bakery caters to those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or those seeking healthier choices. “I have people who come up to me and they’re like, ‘gluten-free is disgusting,’ and then they come and try my stuff and they’re like ‘oh my gosh, this is great.’ That’s one of the things I really pride myself in.”

Allen, a lifelong Owensboro resident, combines years of experience in professional baking with recipes passed down from her great-grandmother. Her journey into baking began around age 10 after taking a cake decorating class at Hobby Lobby.

Now at the helm of her own business, Allen offers a variety of sweet treats, including cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, and decorated sugar cookies, which she cites as a personal favorite. The holiday season is inspiring creations such as snowmen and reindeer designs, all made with royal icing.

Allen is currently focused on takeout orders and custom creations, with plans to expand into breadmaking in the future. For now, she runs the bakery with the help of her mother, who she jokingly refers to as her “unpaid help.”

Madeline’s Specialty Sweets is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
