Freedom House, a rehabilitation center aimed at helping pregnant women and new mothers recover from drug addiction while also protecting their children, is another step closer to opening a location in Owensboro.

Run by Volunteers of America (VOA) Mid-States, Freedom House — which has operated for more than three decades — allows mothers to stay with their children while receiving treatment. The program uses evidence-based clinical services, including individual, group, and family therapy, to help break the cycle of addiction and build a foundation for long-term recovery.

VOA Mid-States recently signed a contract with O’Bryan Contracting to begin construction on the Owensboro facility, located at 1201 Frederica Street. Demolition began on January 2, with construction expected to take about a year.

“We are thrilled to bring O’Bryan Contracting onto this project and start construction on our new Freedom House. With their expertise and support from Morley Corp., soon, we will have a beautiful, welcoming space to support mothers as they work to overcome addiction and create hopeful futures for themselves and their families,” said VOA Mid-States President and CEO Jennifer Hancock.

Sean O’Bryan, president of O’Bryan Contracting, said the design of the building is modern and attractive.

“We feel this will allow O’Bryan Contracting to showcase our talents. The mission of VOA is admirable and just; we look forward to bringing this vision to life and making a positive impact in the community,” he said.

Morley Corp. Manager Cory Smith added, “This campus is designed to provide essential rehabilitative housing and services for pregnant women and mothers, creating a safe and nurturing environment for families.”

Freedom House plans to open its doors by next winter. More information about the program can be found at voamid.org/locations/freedom-house.
