Rosemary Conder, executive director of the Opportunity Center of Owensboro, has announced plans to retire at the end of the year, capping a 3-year tenure marked by renewed energy, expanded programming, and increased community engagement.

Conder stepped into the leadership role in August 2022, having initially committed to serve for 2 years. Her last day will be December 31, 2025.

“I had goals for the organization — the primary one was to increase awareness of an amazing organization, then also to build a really strong leadership team so that when I step away, I won’t be missed,” Conder said. “And I’m exactly there.”

During her time with the Opportunity Center, Conder helped expand life skills and vocational training programs, strengthened community partnerships, and advanced inclusion efforts for individuals with disabilities. She said she’s especially proud of the staff the organization has recruited and trained.

“I do feel like part of our success has been in hiring and training a quality support staff for the programs that we do,” Conder said. “We’ve had tremendous support from the board, the staff, and the community. I’m proud that we have really increased awareness and hopefully created more opportunities for inclusion.”

Conder began her career as a registered nurse and diabetes educator, then became an entrepreneur alongside her husband, Larry. Together, they developed several downtown properties, including The Creme Coffee House, Swank, and more. She later served as executive director of CASA before joining the Opportunity Center.

Her connection to the disability community has always been deeply personal.

“Even when I was a young teenager, I worked for a lady whose daughter was a resident at Wendell Foster,” Conder said. “We also have a grandson who has cerebral palsy, and just seeing the care he’s received and the support for our family — that’s always stayed with me.”

Conder said what she’ll miss most is the daily interaction with the individuals the Opportunity Center serves.

“If you’re having a bad day, all you have to do is come here,” she said. “Lots of hugs. It’s just so uplifting.”

Charlene Salpietra, President of the Board of Directors, praised Conder’s impact.

“We are deeply grateful for Rosemary’s leadership and heartfelt commitment to the mission,” Salpietra said. “Her legacy will continue to shape the Opportunity Center’s impact for years to come.”

The Board has launched a search and selection committee to name Conder’s successor. Interviews will take place throughout the fall, and qualified applicants are encouraged to apply by emailing [email protected].

Founded in 1956, the Opportunity Center of Owensboro is a nonprofit organization that promotes independence, inclusion, and meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The organization will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2026.

As for Conder’s next chapter?

“I don’t know what the future holds exactly,” she said. “I do know I can’t stay home. I love community work and nonprofit work, and I’ll still be involved with several boards and committees.”
