Theatre Workshop of Owensboro is seeking women to audition for its upcoming production of Steel Magnolias during audition sessions Sunday and Monday.

Auditions will be held July 26 at 2 p.m. and July 27 at 6 p.m. at Trinity Centre, 407 West 5th Street. Participants only need to attend one of the two sessions. Women ages 18 and older are encouraged to audition.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, with materials provided on-site.

One of the most popular plays in American theater, Steel Magnolias centers on six Southern women whose friendships help them navigate life’s joys and hardships.

Theatre Workshop describes the women in the play as “witty, intelligent and, above all, real characters,” noting they are not intended to be portrayed as cartoons or caricatures.

According to TWO, the characters are described as:

  • Truvy Jones — About 40 years old. Owner of the beauty shop.
  • Annelle Dupuy-Desoto — 19 years old. Beauty shop assistant.
  • Clairee Belcher — About 66 years old. Widow of a former mayor and a grande dame of the community.
  • Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie — 25 years old. Described as the prettiest girl in town.
  • M’Lynn Eatenton — About 50 years old. Shelby’s mother and a socially prominent career woman.
  • Ouiser (pronounced “Weezer”) Boudreaux — About 66 years old. A wealthy curmudgeon who is acerbic but lovable.

The production is scheduled for Sept. 11-13 and Sept. 18-20 at Trinity Centre. American Electric Power is sponsoring the production, with Owensboro Health serving as the season sponsor.
