Chamber of Young Professionals hosted Jared Ramsey and Brad Youngman, two law enforcement officers as well as CYP members, Wednesday in a special course on self defense for its members.

Youngman said while he and Ramsey are both detectives with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, the training was in no way affiliated with the agency. This was something that the two approached CYP leadership with, hoping to provide a program utilizing their years of professional experience and job certifications.

“This was not a hands-on class where they learned to strike and block punches,” Youngman said. “This was more of an intro into the mindset of how to proceed through daily activities aware of your surroundings.”

Youngman said he and Ramsey covered topics like behavior modification, deterrents and concealed carry law changes.

“As law enforcement officers, we hear someone say when they are accosted ‘the guy came out of nowhere,’” Youngman said. “That’s just not true. A lot of times people are on their phone or not paying attention to their surroundings.”

Youngman said home burglaries are also something addressed. He said when someone is awakened by a noise in their home, he or she is hyper alert, but when they don’t hear a second noise they go back to sleep.

“A burglar is not going to make a second noise,” Youngman said.

Wednesday’s class had 21 participants, but Youngman and Ramsey have spoken to CYP leadership about expanding the class into a series.

“There are so many directions we can go with this,” Youngman said. “If they can just pick up on a few things that help them — that’s perfect.”
