With hopes of uniting the community, several Owensboro residents have joined together in support of a unity and prayer event scheduled for July 28.

Tamara Bostick, who is co-hosting the event with members from Matthew’s Table and Pleasant Valley Community Church, said this is the third event the group has put on and with each one there is more participation from the community.

The unity event, which will take place on the Daviess County Courthouse lawn from 7-8 p.m., will feature local speakers including Jailer Art Maglinger as well as WBKR radio host Angel Welsh and her husband Joe, who is the executive director at Friends of Sinners. There will also be a worship team and prayer.

“We want to show unity within the community regardless of if you’re a felon, addict, whether you attend a church or not, or the color of your skin,” Bostick said. “We are trying to come together as one.”

One way they are bringing people together is through the worship team that is set to perform during the event. The group will consist of members from different churches across the county.

Bostick said the general concept of the unity event is that the group wanted to “be the change that needs to happen.” She said she felt like the message of unity and support was dying down in the media and with all that’s been going on, she doesn’t want it to fading away.

“We feel like the only way for change to happen is through Christ,” Bostick said. “We have to get out here and start loving people. We need to get outside the church — showing love and unity — that’s when the change will happen. We are all God’s children, He loves you the way you are.”

Bostick said they want the entire community to come out and show support for one another.
