Opportunity Center hosts Habitat for Humanity to teach their members some life skills like hammering.

The local Habitat for Humanity chapter celebrated National Disability Awareness Month with a visit to the Opportunity Center of Owensboro on Tuesday. Clients received instruction and hands-on experience in providing decent and affordable housing to the community.

After a quick safety class and training session, Opportunity Center clients helped build two interior walls to be used in a Habitat house.

“We are very excited to partner with the Opportunity Center and share the joy of serving others with their clients,” said Jeremy Stephens, Executive Director at Habitat. “This partnership gives Habitat the ability to honor those with disabilities and their contributions to our community and will demonstrate that everyone can make a difference, when given the chance.”

Habitat currently has five open construction projects in Owensboro-Daviess County. The walls built by the Opportunity Center will be used in a house on West 10th Street.

“The Opportunity Center is thrilled to participate in this project to help create a home for a local family,” said Rosemary Conder, Opportunity Center Executive Director. “We are always looking for ways to increase awareness of the abilities of those we support. Our mission aligns with Habitat For Humanity’s in providing opportunities for individuals to thrive.”

Stephens added, “When nonprofits work together, the entire community benefits. This type of partnership shows the best in our organizations and allows us to use our strengths to better the world we live in.”
