In a recent Owensboro Times story, an Owensboro native and active duty member of the United States Navy mentioned that he had burgoo shipped to him overnight from Moonlite Bar-B-Q in Owensboro to his duty station in Bremerton, Washington.

Moonlite co-owner Pat Bosley said that the restaurant is no stranger to sending Bar-B-Q to our active duty military.

“We do APO (Army Post Office) and FPO (Fleet Post Office) orders to the military, so a lot of it’s gone overseas,” Bosley said. “Of course that goes U.S. mail to a military base first and they send it on to the address. We do non-perishables like the country ham, jarred burgoo and sauces and stuff like that. You can’t send perishable stuff to APO and FPO because you don’t know how long it’s going to take.”

Bosley said the restaurant also ships throughout the United States, with most orders staying within the continental U.S. He said, while they do ship to areas of Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii, it “can get pretty expensive to get it there.”

“It’s one to two days depending on where you’re at in the country,” Bosley said. “We ship out Bar-B-Q and burgoo — we don’t do any sides or pies or anything — we just do the meats and sauces. That’s all I ship.”

Bosley said that mutton has become an especially popular mail order item lately thanks to cooking channels such as Food Network.

“We do the burgoo, mutton, pork and beef,” Bosley said. “You can’t get mutton anywhere else, so mutton and burgoo are real popular because you don’t compete.”

While mail order sales do not drive their business, Bosley said those orders speak to how the restaurant does business.

“For us, meal order is more of a service than a business. I do it to take care of our customers,” Bosley said. “It’s not a big part of our business; it’s a big part of taking care of our customers.”

Bosley also said, on any given weekend night, there may be several different license plates from a variety of different states on the cars in the parking lot. He feels that it’s those visitors, as well as customers that have moved away from home, that are the ones that will influence mail order sales.

“Those customers become your mail order customers too. Moonlite kind of gets to be this ambassador for Owensboro Bar-B-Q with the mail order,” Bosley said. “I think people just want a taste of home. That’s what it’s about.”
