Donut burgers one day. Boom boom shrimp the next. You never know what you’re going to find on the menu at J’s Good Grub food truck. But that’s part of the fun.
“We’re always coming up with new items to keep things interesting and make us different,” says owner Jeremy “Jay” Johnson. “Every experience with us is a fresh-made experience. Our burgers come hot off the grill. Our Philly Cheesesteak is made to order so the cheese is still melted the way it’s supposed to be. We try to set ourselves apart so people remember us.”
It seems to be working.
If you ever drive by J’s Good Grub and see a line out front, those people are likely waiting for cajun ranch fries, which Jay says has become the most popular item. The truck serves 60-90 pounds of french fries every day. Traditional wings in J’s signature sauce and the ribeye flatbread sandwich and are customer favorites too.
Since launching the food truck in September of 2017, Johnson and his crew have been increasingly busy. J’s Good Grub has become a regular at festivals like Friday After 5, July 4th fireworks and the Owensboro Air Show. During the week, the truck sets up shop during lunch hours at local factories, plants, and offices. But recently the truck has been requested in Ohio County and Hancock County too.
To keep up with the demand, Jay is planning to add a second truck.
“We appreciate local people supporting local business. That’s why we want to add a second food truck, so we can take out of town bookings but still have a truck here in Owensboro too. Our vision is to push out further and hire more staff.”
This rapid expansion is a dream come true. Johnson has always loved food and he’s always loved to cook. After working in the food industry to help his wife run her daycare business while she finished her degree, the Johnsons decided it was time to get the truck.
“This really happened because of my wife, Antoinette,” Johnson said. “She came home one day and said, ‘You helped me live my dream, now let’s live yours’. Let’s make this happen.’ ”
The name was his mother’s idea because it reflects the ever-changing menu.
“I love the feedback. I love making things better for our customers. For me, it comes down to three things: good quality food, being consistent, and being there for people. That’s it. It’s all about blessings,” Jay summarized. “Maybe one day we’ll get a brick and mortar building, but this food truck actually allows us to get out there with the people and spread the blessings better.”
