St. Mary Magdalene wins top Bar-B-Q cooking team

The rain did not stop the Backyard Bar-B-Q and competition Bar-B-Q teams from cheering and celebrating during the 2019 International Bar-B-Q awards ceremony held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

This year, there were 32 teams in the Backyard Bar-B-Q cook off. Nine of those teams were first-time entries in the Bar-B-Q festival Backyard cook off.

Third place took home $200 and a trophy, second place took home $300 and a trophy and first place took home $500 and a trophy.

With a total of $4,700 and several plaques and trophies awarded in this category, here are the winners:

Best Booth: Rollin’ Smoke — $200 and a plaque

Beef: 1st place Pork Swords 2nd place Barren River BBQ, 3rd place All Smoked Up

Chicken: 1st place All Sauced Up, 2nd place Double J’s Barbecue team, 3rd place Barren River BBQ,

Pork: 1st place Lifetime Financial Growth, 2nd place Tru Blu BBQ, 3rd (tie) Double J’s Barbecue team/Slow Smokers

Double J’s Barbecue team won grand champion, receiving a permanent trophy, a traveling trophy and $1,500.

The Backyard Bar-B-Q awards were sponsored by Kentucky Legend.

In the Governor’s Cup Cooking Team Competition, teams compete in mutton, chicken and burgoo and are required to cook a minimum of 600 pounds of mutton, 300 chickens and 60 gallons of burgoo. Teams also cook 600 pounds of pork to offer when the pits open for selling on Saturday.

Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Lourdes, Precious Blood and St. Mary Magdalene received participation awards.

Winners:

Burgoo: 1st Precious Blood, 2nd St. Mary Magdalene, 3rd Our Lady of Lourdes

Chicken: 1st St. Mary Magdalene, 2nd Precious Blood, 3rd Our Lady of Lourdes

Mutton: 1st Blessed Mother, 2nd St. Mary Magdalene, 3rd Precious Blood 

Team Spirit Award, voted by the people: Our Lady of Lourdes

Governor’s Cup Overall Winners:

1st St. Mary Magdalene, 2nd Precious Blood, 3rd Blessed Mother

Proceeds from the cooking teams go to local charities and educational organizations.
