The Bourbon Review, a quarterly magazine that features all things bourbon, has once again named the Miller House among the top bourbon bars in America.

“Bars on our list don’t just have expansive whiskey menus. Well okay, they definitely do, but there’s more to being one of America’s Best Bourbon Bars than that,” the magazine wrote. “We look for creative cocktail and food menus that use bourbon in unexpectedly delicious ways. We look for private barrel selections, showing the personalized palates on each team. And most importantly, we look for staff members who are passionate about sharing their wealth of bourbon knowledge with their guests.”

Larry Kirk said when he opened The Miller House in 2009 he only began with 30 to 40 types of bourbon. Today he has over 700.

“We got new ones in today,” he said. “And we continue to grow. We decided if we were in Kentucky, we needed to focus on bourbon.”

Kirk said he considers Owensboro to be the western gateway for bourbon lovers.

“This is the first place you can stop and see a bunch of bourbon,” he said of the downtown Owensboro restaurant.

According to Kirk, Owensboro makes the most logical first stop for people from west of the Mississippi River visiting the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, especially with O.Z. Tyler Distillery now on the trail map.

Dave Kirk with destination management at Visit Owensboro said it’s places like The Miller House that make Owensboro a place to check out.

“To be recognized by the most popular bourbon publication is something we take great pride in,” he said. “The Miller House certainly is deserving of this honor and is a must-see Owensboro experience.”
