Azucar Lounge opened at 116 West Second St. in early August, and since its opening, people are still unsure what a tapas lounge offers. Craft cocktails, spirits, wines and beers, dry, cured meats and a variety of cheese are just a sampling of what customers can order at the lounge.

Owner Justin Hagan said that people are excited to try something new, but employees still have to explain the lounge serves tapas — small dishes that are usually served at a bar.

“The easiest way to help people understand is by saying we are nothing more than Gambrinus, but with just more “snack” options,” Hagan said, referring to Gambrinus Libation Emporium, the bar that was previously located in the same space.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Halloween, Azucar is hosting a charity masquerade ball, with proceeds going to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of the Ohio Valley.

“We are doing this because we believe in community and standing together,” Hagan said. “We are in the middle of domestic violence awareness month, and although CASA focuses on neglected and abused children, they still need a voice, and CASA provides this for them.”

The menu for the event will be the normal tapas menu along with some “new, fun and exciting” drinks that will be on special, including a caramel apple cocktail that tastes like a caramel apple sucker and a new tap opening.

There will be a $100 cash prize for the best mask, but Hagan said that any costume is acceptable.

Andy Brasher will play during the evening. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 per couple and can be purchased here or at the door. Reserved tables are also available at the event.

Hagan is currently working on a Sunday Brunch menu, which will feature bottomless mimosas, a Bloody Mary bar and musical entertainment.

He is also adding more items to the tapas menu.

On Wednesdays, Nectar Valley, a local bluegrass band plays and on Thursday, Josh Orion plays acoustical music.

With creative drink offerings like the Azucar, Butterfinger and Bourbon Ball martini, along with the creative tapas menu, Hagan hopes that people come and stay.

“The lounge is a place to gather with friends, family and co-workers and its atmosphere offers a great place to relax, unwind and socialize,” Hagan said.

Azucar’s hours are from 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
