Owensboro’s newest Mexican restaurant is officially open. Owners of El Molcajete, located at 2845 West Parrish Ave., spent three months renovating the space and creating their menu to encapsulate a modern dining experience sprinkled with authentic nods to their Mexican heritage.

Luver Villanueva, one of the restaurant’s three owners, said he and his business partners were excited to be in Owensboro opening their first restaurant.

All of the hand-painted chairs and tables were delivered from Mexico, displaying bright colors and a variety of historic and contemporary Mexican architecture, artwork and scenery. When Villanueva walked into the space for the first time, everything had been taken out, including the booths, artwork and dining sets.

That gave Villanueva and his partners ample room to redesign and renovate the space, which features two dining rooms, a full kitchen and a large bar area. The bar, Villanueva said, was the only fixture still in place when they arrived, and even that area was rebuilt and redesigned to become brand new.

“It took us three months to get everything in place,” he said. “We did everything ourselves, everything new. The bar was there, but it was an old one — we threw everything out and created a new one.”

El Molcajete’s full menu can be viewed on their Facebook page. Customers can dine in, complete a carryout order by calling 270-240-2224 or order online here.
