Banky's

Tim Collier said he always dreamed of opening up his own soul food restaurant, and on May 6 that’s exactly what he’ll do. Banky’s Sports Bar and Grill will be a family owned restaurant and bar — boasting a variety of menu items, beverages and activities for the entire community to enjoy.

Banky’s is located at 1109 W. 9th St., where Sandbar Sports Grill & Bar was previously located.

Collier said he named the restaurant after his late uncle, a huge sports fan who spent years of his life coaching and supporting the youth of his neighborhood.

“He was known around the community, especially by the kids,” Collier said. “He coached baseball and football for little league organizations here for years. We wanted to honor his name.”

Banky’s will offer pizza, wings, burgers and fries on a regular basis. But on Sundays, Collier will focus on soul food such as fried chicken, meatloaf and collard greens.

While cities like Louisville have an array of soul food restaurants, Collier said Owensboro was in need of venues offering home-cooked meals. Collier said his brother will serve as the full-time chef at Banky’s.

Aside from food and drinks, patrons can enjoy karaoke, open mic nights, a game of pool, a DJ and six TVs spread across the building from which to watch sporting events. Collier will also have a VIP booth available for certain events, and customers can rent the venue out for special occasions, such as birthday parties and wedding receptions.

Most importantly to Collier, he wants Banky’s to be a warm, inviting place where anybody and everybody is welcome.

“We won’t turn anybody away. This is open to everyone,” Collier said. “Be a friendly neighbor, come on by and check us out.”

Banky’s will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
