Baker’s Dozen is set to make its grand opening this Friday. The new bakery will serve more than 30 different types of donuts alongside bagels, bread, cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, cookie dough, and pastries.
The bakery will be located at 1331 Frederica Street, in the former Pizza Hut across from the Messenger-Inquirer office.
To celebrate its grand opening, the establishment will truly be giving customers a “baker’s dozen” experience by offering a free donut for every dozen bought.
Baker’s Dozen is co-owned by local couple Josh and Alyssa Steeley.
Despite their family’s long history in the food service industry — with Josh’s mother spending 10 years as a cake decorator — the Steeleys never intended to open up a bakery.
The idea and opportunity came about after The Family Bakery closed down earlier this year.
“They offered me a really good deal on a lot of the equipment,” Josh said. “Me, my brother, mom, and wife made the decision that we were going to buy the equipment and try to find a place to open up a bakery and run our own business.”
This venture comes off of the heels of a few challenging years for the Steeley family. In 2018, Josh was diagnosed with end stage heart failure.
Within 45 days he received an LVAD and an RVAD through open heart surgery. After living with the devices for 23 months, Josh received a heart transplant on April 8, 2020.
“After I got my transplant I immediately felt better,” Josh said. “I’ve been doing pretty well. I’ve had a couple of hiccups but nothing major.”
Josh said that he has spent much of his time staying active and with his family.
As non-native residents of Owensboro, the Steeleys expressed how grateful they are for the Owensboro community and the community’s excitement for their new business.
“Owensboro has been nothing but a blessing,” Josh said. “I’m really excited and looking forward to serving the people of Owensboro because they’ve become a central part of my life and my family’s life.”
