The National Weather Service is currently tracking a fast-moving winter system that is moving across northern and eastern Missouri this afternoon and will push into parts of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana and northwest Kentucky this evening.

The very leading edge of this weather system will move into southern Illinois and southwest Indiana between 6 – 7 p.m.

As the evening progresses, it will change from rain to a mix of rain and snow, then eventually to snow as the evening progresses. Along with the wintry mix, gusty northwest winds near 25 mph could drop wind chills into the lower 20s and upper teens overnight.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 – 10 p.m. for Jefferson, Wayne, and Edwards counties in southern Illinois.

Even though ground and road surfaces are still warm, a quick burst of snow may produce a brief accumulation of snow on elevated surfaces. With temperatures expected to drop below freezing overnight, some slick spots may remain on roads late this evening and overnight.

If you are planning travel this evening or overnight across parts of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, or northwest Kentucky, keep posted on the latest weather and road conditions.
