The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is preparing to activate a new traffic signal on Frederica Street at the intersection with Fairfax Drive and Monticello Drive. The new signal was placed in flashing mode Friday morning.

KYTC Public Information Officer Keith Todd said Gulfstream Commercial Services paid for the traffic light, which will help drivers entering The Shoppes at 3800, a mixed-use development which will include new retail and restaurant and space for multi-family residences and a hotel.

“That light is being paid for by the developer, based on a traffic impact study and the number of vehicles expected to come in and out of the shopping center,” Todd said.

According to Todd, Gulfstream is paying for both the signal and turn lane, construction and installation which was conducted by KYTC.

The new signal is in flashing mode to allow motorists to become familiar with the signal location.

Traffic on Fairfax Drive and Monticello Drive should continue to obey stop signs at the intersection and yield to cross traffic on Frederica Street.

The new signal will remain in flashing mode until the signal goes into full red-yellow-green operation. Weather permitting, the signal is expected to become fully operational sometime on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Motorists should be prepared for potential changes in traffic flow the signal will bring to this intersection once it is fully activated.

Just over 20,000 vehicles travel this section of Frederica Street in an average day.
