Owensboro Tennis Complex and Moreland Park will see plenty of action this weekend as the site for the United States Tennis Association State Tri-Level State Tournament, set for Friday through Sunday.

The Owensboro Daviess County Tennis Association won the bid to host the tournament, which precedes sectional play that takes place Oct. 18-20 in Louisville.

In a tri-level tournament, three pairs of doubles partners make up one team, with each pair playing in different levels based on their ranking from 2.5-4.5 by the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP). Age divisions for both men’s and women’s teams are 18+, 40+ and 55+.

Two teams from Owensboro will be playing in the tournament, an 18-and-over team with rankings of 3.0-4.0, as well as a 55-and-over team with 3.0-4.0 players.

“To win a match, a team must win two of the three courts of play at a given time,” said USTA local league coordinator Stephanie Gray. “Each team will play three to four matches over the weekend, with the team winning the most matches advancing to the next level.”

Anna Pierce, USTA local league coordinator said that because 25-30 teams are playing in the state tournament, around 250 tennis players will be in Owensboro for the event.

ODTCA has hosted the 55-and-over adult state tournament previously, so Pierce said it’s nice to switch to tri-level this year.

ODCTA is looking for volunteers to work the two tournament sites — Owensboro Tennis Complex and Moreland Park — on Friday, Saturday and until noon on Sunday. If interested, contact Pierce at 502-974-7221. There is a volunteer appreciation dinner on Thursday night.

“If you’re a fan of tennis, you should come out and support your local players while watching some good tennis,” Pierce said, adding there will also be vendors at OTC with tennis wear and accessories.
