Owensboro fire chief to retire at year’s end

Owensboro Fire Chief Steven Mitchell is set to retire at the end of the year. The City of Owensboro is accepting applications for the position as of Friday.

Mitchell said his official last day has not yet been set.

“I hope to work some with the new chief,” he said.

Applications for fire chief of Owensboro Fire Department are due Sept. 7 and Mitchell said he expects interviews to start later in the month.

Mitchell was hired as Owensboro Fire Chief 11 years ago. Prior to that he was a fire chief in Iowa and spent a majority of his 37-year career as a firefighter in Urbana, Ill.

Daviess County Fire Chief Dwane Smeathers has also announced his retirement. Smeathers’ last day will be Aug. 31. Daviess County Fiscal Court has already begun internal interviews for the position.
