National Hospice and Palliative Care Month is November and Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky is gearing up to celebrate with several community events aimed at educating people about the differences between hospice care and palliative care, and how both can be beneficial to patients and their families.

“Hospice and Palliative Care Month is a great time to make sure that the people in our community know the differences between the types of care we provide, and also what’s available to them when the time comes that they need one of our services,” said Belinda Blair, Hospice and Palliative Care of Western KY CEO.  “We also have bereavement services that are available to anyone in our community that is grieving the loss of a loved one.”

The organization has several events planned to celebrate National Hospice and Palliative Care Month in November, including an opportunity to tour the Heartford House, their inpatient facility in Owensboro. Two community forums are also planned, affording people the opportunity to ask questions of a panel of Hospice and Palliative Care experts.

“As we visit with people in the communities we serve, we find that they have a lot of questions, as this is new territory for them,” Blair said. “We wanted to provide several opportunities for families to get those questions answered.”

Tours at the Heartford House, 2914 Old Hartford Road, are 10 a.m. – noon Nov. 9. The two community forums Nov. 21. All three events are free and open to the public.

A Veterans appreciation lunch is at noon on Nov. 12.

We serve so many veterans through both our Hospice and our Palliative Care programs,” Blair said. “We just want to show our appreciation for their dedication to our country and the sacrifices they made so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.”

There is no charge for the luncheon, but veterans and their guests are encouraged to pre-register for the event at https://one.bidpal.net/veteranslunch2019/welcome

The Hospice outreach team is also speaking to churches, civic groups and healthcare organizations throughout the months of November and December. If you would like to schedule a speaker, call 270-926-7565.
