The Panther Creek Bridge in southern Daviess County is expected to reopen next week.

Judge-Executive Al Mattingly received a call from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet on Wednesday saying the KY 81 bridge should be open late Tuesday or early Wednesday, barring no more issues.

Repairs to the bridge began on Oct. 28. The project was awarded to Judy C. Harp, Co. for $327,000.

The bridge was severely damaged on Aug. 14 when the beams were struck by scrap steel hanging off the trailer of a passing commercial truck.

A substantial detour between Calhoun and Owensboro has been required to travel around the closure. Approximately 5,200 vehicles normally cross the bridge on a daily basis. Opened to traffic in 1934, the 246-foot structure has a 109-foot span and includes a six-panel Pratt style truss design.
