Apollo High School will host its seventh annual eight-hour mini-marathon to support the University of Kentucky’s DanceBlue Hematology/Oncology Clinic at the Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington. The mini-marathon will be from 3 to 11 p.m. Sunday in the AHS gymnasium. The school is located at 2280 Tamarack Road.

More than 300 students representing Apollo, Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic high schools, the Academy of Young Leaders, College View Middle School and the University of Kentucky will be on their feet and active throughout the evening with a “no-sitting, no-sleeping” rule. The event will feature dancing, games and activities to support patients and families fighting pediatric cancer.

Each hour is dedicated to a specific theme with special music and games. This year’s themes include Holiday, Exercise, Throwback and Mystery hours. A service tent will be set up where students can fill out cards or make bracelets to send to the patients at the local pediatrician and cancer offices and the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center in Owensboro. During the last hour of the marathon, known as the Celebration of Life hour, students will observe a moment of silence to honor the fight of those afflicted with pediatric cancer. The hour will include a moving and meaningful message from a family that has taken the fight against pediatric cancer into their own hands.

The evening will conclude with an announcement of the total funds donated “For The Kids” through this marathon.

Apollo High School is recognized as the first high school on the western side of the state to host a mini-marathon in conjunction with UK.

Apollo’s DanceBlue Club works throughout the year to spread the information and mission of DanceBlue to students across our community. DanceBlue has earned a reputation not only as an Apollo event but also as an opportunity for the entire community to come together to raise money for the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic at the University of Kentucky. Guests and visitors are welcome to stop by at any time during this event to make donations. Donations will also be accepted at Apollo High School during regular school hours prior to Sunday.
