Construction on a new greenhouse at Apollo High School is set to begin in the coming months. The Daviess County Board of Education approved the project last week during a regular meeting.

The new greenhouse will replace the existing one at the school.

“The existing greenhouse is located where we intend to build the new addition to the school,” said Sara Harley, Daviess County Public School director of finance. “We are replacing the greenhouse now so as to not interrupt instruction.”

Harley said the expansion at AHS will be new classrooms and a connector to the school. She said the current greenhouse will be used until the new one is complete.

Apollo’s new greenhouse relocation is similar to Daviess County High School’s recent greenhouse move.

DCHS’s original greenhouse had to also be moved to make way for the expansion of the school’s football stadium, which was completed in August. Its old greenhouse, which was built in 2000, was destroyed and the school built a new one next to the building.

“Basically the same thing is going to happen at Apollo. With our new addition, we need (the space) where the current greenhouse is for that work,” Harley said. “We’ll take care of it this summer so next school year they’ll have the new greenhouse ready to go.”

Harley said construction on the greenhouse will begin as soon as the school district gets approval from The Kentucky Department of Education.

Work includes demolition, site clearing, earthwork, termite control, water distribution, pre-engineered greenhouse structure, HVAC & plumbing systems, electrical and others.

It is expected to be completed for the 2020 to 2021 school year. Apollo’s new greenhouse will be located next to the school.

Plants and herbs grown at both schools as part of the ag program can be purchased by the public.
