Another bar in downtown Owensboro has closed. As of Friday, Azucar Lounge, located at 116 W. 2nd St., is no longer in business. According to Azucar owners and City Commissioner Larry Conder, who owns the property with his wife Rosemary, new tenants will take over space in the near future.

Azucar opened up where Hajimari Sushi Bar and Gambrinus Libation Emporium were formerly located. Azucar opened in August as Owensboro’s first tapas bar.

A Jan. 19 Facebook post from Azucar cited a desire to sell and focus on other ventures as the reason behind the closing. The bar had received positive reviews from the community during its six-month tenure, earning 4.8 out of 5 stars on Facebook and recommendations from 64 people.

“Azucar has had the pleasure of serving downtown Owensboro for close to 7 months, [and] we have established a name for ourselves,” the post said. “Azucar will transition, and the new owners have some great plans to continue.”

Conder said the new owners will make an announcement about their upcoming business when ready, but that people may see some activity around the location as stuff gets moved in.

“Rosemary and I are excited to announce there will be a new business opening up there in the next few months that will bring back the quality and ambiance we all can enjoy!” Conder said Sunday.
