Owensboro Public Schools will be holding a special election for the superintendent screening committee this week. Because the OPS district has a population that meets or exceeds a state-mandated percentage of minority students, the district’s screening committee must include at least one minority parent or guardian.

OPS counted the nominations for its superintendent screening committee Friday and found out that a minority representative had not received enough nominations to be selected for the committee. This special election will ensure that a minority representative serves as one of six members of the screening committee.

OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said nominations for a minority representative will be accepted Monday and Tuesday at OPS Central Office. Any minority parent or guardian of a current student can nominate a minority parent or guardian for the position between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Once the nominations are in, any parent with a student currently enrolled at OPS can vote for the minority representative at OPS Central Office from 7:30 a.m. –  4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Those voting or nominating can do so at the front desk inside the building, located at 450 Griffith Ave.

Once a minority parent or guardian has been elected, the superintendent screening committee will include two parents/guardians, one principal, one OPS board member, two teachers and one classified staff member.
