Wednesday marks the first day of what will be two weeks of non-traditional learning for students in Daviess County Public Schools.

“These are days where students can be home, and we can still provide education services to them,” said Damon Fleming, DCPS director of student services. “A lot of what we will be dealing with will be online work through Google classrooms.”

DCPS is participating in the Non-Traditional Instruction Program as a result of a state-recommended school closure due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

“Starting about the middle of last week up till yesterday, (we’ve been) building the NTI programs,” Fleming said. “Our teachers came in yesterday and they worked really hard at getting ready for the kids, getting ready for the NTI programs.”

Students will take NTI classes for eight days until Spring Break March 30 to April 3. Fleming said DCPS is tentatively scheduled to resume normal classes April 6.

DCPS was closed Monday and Tuesday, which the school district isn’t required to make up. The state mandates that students attend 170 days of school in a year. DCPS students go to school for 173 days.

The school board can choose later to remove the additional days of instruction and still meet its state requirements.

“The principals have been outstanding in terms of providing leadership in their respective schools,” said Matt Robbins, DCPS superintendent “You can’t pull off what we’ve done having never done NTI before without some outstanding leadership.”
