The eighth annual Color Blast 5K is quickly approaching. More than 30 teams have already registered for the event, which is set for March 21.

The Color Blast 5K, title sponsored by Independence Bank, has always been held in March to celebrate
disability awareness month.

This year, race organizers are excited for the event to fall on World Down Syndrome Day, making Owensboro the largest celebration in the region for the internationally-recognized day.

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, participants are encouraged to “rock their socks,” a symbol of support seen across the globe. Socks can be crazy patterns or mismatched designs. Also unique to this year’s event, siblings are going to be recognized for their special relationship and contribution to the lives of those with disabilities.

Race participants are encouraged to sign up to recognize the positive impact individuals with special needs have on our lives, to acknowledge their abilities and help spread awareness. Puzzle Pieces, Green River Area Down Syndrome Association, Dream Riders and Team Karlie have partnered in the Color Blast since its inception seven years ago. Funds raised from the event are divided among those four organizations and then a percentage is given back to WHAS Crusade for Children in Louisville.

“The Color Blast has become an annual trademark, not only for disability awareness and celebration, but it’s also a fun event for schools and families to attend that starts a conversation about having awareness of individuals with disabilities,” said Puzzle Pieces Executive Director Amanda Owen.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. at Moreland Park in Owensboro. There will be three color stations along
the 3.1-mile route. GRADSA’s Star Squad dance team will hold a special performance after the race and
Owensboro Twisters will be on-site for the crowd to enjoy.

The early registration sign-up fee is $25 and $15 for students, and on March 13 registration will go up to $35. The top three largest teams will get a trophy. March 6 is the registration deadline for a guaranteed t-shirt.
