OMU’s Communication and Public Relations Manager Sonya Dixon reported that there were no major changes to the company’s contributions to the community during a special meeting Thursday.

In 2019, OMU contributed a total of nearly $181,000 to Owensboro.

Dixon reported that OMU donated $23,275 in various sponsorships to the Owensboro community.

In addition to the general sponsorships, $53,000 was also awarded by the Commission to United Way as a match for what employees gave.

Of the total, Dixon said OMU gives roughly $50,000 annually to the Salvation Army as part of its Community Cares Program, which disperses funds to people and families in the community struggling to pay their utility bills.

Customers also donated $388 to the program.

“There’s something you can’t put (a number) value on such as the involvement from our members in the community,” Dixon told the Commission.

She said the total doesn’t include the countless hours and contributions OMU’s employees make personally each year through working with local churches, schools, nonprofits, sports teams and clubs.

Also on Thursday’s agenda, OMU is looking to improve some of its services in the coming months by offering more bill pay and alert options to its customers.

David Boarman, OMU’s IT manager, said his team is looking to offer paperless billing, real-time information for online accounts and other ways for people to report a power outage besides calling.

This special meeting of the Commission is held on the first Thursday of each month.
