COVID-19 has ruined a lot of plans, but one Owensboro couple was not about to let the coronavirus mess with their wedding day. Nathan Seaton and Ashley Humphrey got married Saturday with the help of technology and some family and friends.

The two have been dating for 10 years and got engaged in August. Once the virus hit the U.S., the two knew there was a chance it would impact the wedding.

“We held hope for as long as possible that the situation would change and the wedding could go on as planned,” Nathan said.

He said one month before the wedding, it became clear they could not get 200 people in a room together, so they postponed the wedding indefinitely.

“Ashley was devastated when we had to postpone the wedding she had planned for months,” he said. “She grew more anxious as the original wedding date got closer.”

Six days before the original wedding day, Nathan said he half-jokingly suggested they go ahead and get married on the original date as planned.

Ashley asked how they were going to get all of those people in a room together and stay in compliance with CDC guidelines. Being an IT professional, Nathan proposed telepresence robots and Google Meet.

By Tuesday, four days before the original wedding date, the guests were confirmed to be available and wedding planning started.

Nathan said the group moved venues to accommodate the technology needs, so the pair got married in the studio at Tanner+West.

The DJ remotely controlled the music over the internet from almost 200 miles away, and everyone wore masks until they were in place for the wedding.

“The big event with our family and friends that we originally planned will still happen one day when it’s safe to do so,” Nathan said. “The wedding will be changed to a vow renewal with a reception.”

Nathan said he was focused on making the day as special as possible for Ashley given the circumstances.

“When Nathan approached me with his plan less than a week before our original wedding day, I didn’t think he could pull it off on such a short timeline, but it turned out wonderfully,” Ashley said. “It’s very characteristic of our relationship that I make elaborate plans, they fall apart due to something out our control, and he swoops in and saves the day. The fact that it happened with our wedding too made it even more special.”
