Gov. Andy Beshear is requesting the Owensboro Family YMCA be designated as a child care provider.

Child care operations were halted on March 20 when Beshear ordered all daycares to close. Now, the state is asking the organization to assess the need for childcare in the community.

But next week, they may be opening back up for certain emergency personnel, healthcare workers and grocery store staff’s children.

Kristi Harrison, director of child care at the Owensboro Family YMCA, said if they were able to open they would start child care services on Monday.

“We could host up to 40 children per day,” she said. “ Right now we are only cleared to host emergency and healthcare personnel. We know there is a need for all essential workers to have an opportunity to access care, but we are only authorized for emergency and healthcare employers.”

To be put on the call list for YMCA childcare openings, call 270-926-YMCA (9622) before 1 p.m. Thursday.

YMCA officials say they’ll be making their decision about opening up by Thursday. They say the cost will be $39 per day per child for up to eight and a half hours of child care.

If you are in need of essential childcare, contact the YMCA at 270-926-9622 and ask for Harrison or email her at [email protected].
